skin care tips (for us hormonal messes)

Part One/

Great skin comes with great genes, or a very good skin care routine. Now I know, my genes regarding skin might not be the best. Also my face seems to breakout as soon as my hormones are slightly out of balance. But I wasn’t thinking of that until recently.

I saw a pimple -> I used a cream/serum/mask that google suggested and hoped it would fix everything. But a cream sadly can’t fix what is on the inside.

First you need to heal on the inside for it to show on the outside.

Now I made a little research, and tried to find a skin care routine for us who are dealing with hormonal imbalances, breakouts and acne, or generally want to have a healthy body, mind and skin.

What causes hormonal changes?

In women, the most common reason for hormonal fluctuations is the period. Breakouts here show mostly right before or during the period. In some other women, hormones change due to a medical condition, like pcos or thyroid issues. I myself have dealt with an underactive thyroid for a few years now, and will probably continue for a while. Besides that, other factors like stress, not enough sleep and no exercise can mess with our hormones. Special medications that are part of a hormone therapy can also have an effect on our skin, and here it’s important to make sure to find a right skin care routine for yourself, but also to make certain lifestyle changes to support your skin and your hormones.

What would help?

Firstly, if you do believe that your hormones are the root issue of your skin problems, mental health, or other physical factors, it’s always important to check up with your doctor/dermatologist/gynecologist. In lots of cases there is no cream, no tea, no exercise that could fix certain issues. With your doctor you would get a personalized therapy and minimize the risk of harming yourself with products that could irritate your skin and body.

This is my routine:

In the last years I was on a search (and still am) for products that suit me and show positive results. I created a routine for myself, where I would use 2-3 beauty products each morning and evening. I wouldn’t use the same products every day though, but would switch out one product each day. For example every morning and evening I…

cleanse

  1. firstly with the Micellar Water Cleanser from Nivea, specially for sensitive skin. I use it to take off my make up. Works great.
  2. Then I deep cleanse with the CeraVe foaming cleanser for normal to oily skin to make sure to rid my skin of any make up leftovers, dirt/dust from the outside world, and the excess oil. I can only recommend it.

After cleansing my face I would usually continue with a:

toner

I use the Skin Clearing Mattifying Tea Tree Oil Toner from The Body Shop. It stings a little when you use it, but personally doesn’t harm my face at all. Absorbs excess oil and leaves my face with a matte look.

sun-protection

To keep a young and healthy skin, it’s important to protect it from UV rays, even on gloomy days where there is barely any sun. I use the Maybelline Face Studio Primer with SPF 30 before applying my make up.

The rest of the skin care routine varies each day.

For example mondays, thursdays and saturdays I like to use..

serum

I like the Ordinary serums. I like to switch up between Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%, Marine Hyaluronics and Ascorbyl Glucoside Solution 12%. Shows nice results, doesn’t irritate my skin and the products are pretty affordable!

Tuesdays and Fridays, it’s time for a..

mask

I will be honest I am not a fancy mask person. But I received a small collection of The Body Shop face masks as a gift and fell in love with it. Gives my face a fresh and clean feeling, and they smell great too.

And wednesdays and sundays, I..

exfoliate

My preferred type is mechanical exfoliation. I use the Yves Rocher Pure Menthe peeling for oily and mixed skin. My face always feels so soft and clean afterwards.

If you have any suggestions of your own feel free to share them in the comments!

Of course there are also more natural ways to heal your skin and certain lifestyle changes you can make to keep your skin healthy. I will write more about that soon in part 2!
